Acorn Events inspires students

Event structures specialist Acorn Events engaged with us to deliver a stage building masterclass for students on our Foundation Degree in Live Events Production.

Acorn devised a day of practical training at their site near Leeds, giving students the opportunity to help build Layher-based scaffold structures for some of their biggest projects.

Said Acorn’s Rebecca Nutter: “We believe that supporting a new generation of talent is the key to the success of the events industry and that’s why we chose to give the students at Backstage Academy a chance to work on our test builds for some of our most prestigious clients and events.

“Giving the students an insight into what we do as a company, whilst providing them with extensive training on Layher scaffolding gave them an insight into what it would be like to work on some of the most reputable projects within the industry.”

The students learnt how Layher staging systems could be used to build things like festival stages, ground supports and FOH structures.

Said Nutter: “The students performed well and a number certainly stood out showing their ability to guide their team and make the most out of this vital opportunity. This gave them the opportunity to dip their toes into the water which certainly seemed to make them thirsty for more!”

The tuition formed part of the students’ month-long Staging Module on the FdA course at Backstage Academy. Student Mollie Ellis-Leach said: “This was my first ever experience of building a stage and I thought it was great. It was a real insight into how stages are assembled for live events and I’m sure it will be useful to me.”

Due to the success of the masterclass, Acorn Events hope to do more hands-on training with us in years to come.

Said Backstage Academy Technical Director Gareth Welbourn: “We aim to expose the students to a variety of staging systems and work closely with the industry’s reputable suppliers so that students get a real insight into what it’s like working in the events sector.

“We were delighted that Acorn Events were keen to take the time out of their busy schedule to engage and inspire the students.

“The students got real value out of the training session so I’d like to thank Acorn for their involvement in the course.”
