MA in Live Visual Design and Production (Subject to validation)

This postgraduate course focuses on creative and technical design techniques for large scale live events and media centric installations. During an intensive year of study, you will work collaboratively through creative, technical and production workflows and lead in research for the advancement of technology and creative practice. You will undergo training in production techniques through intensive project delivery whilst engaging with industry.

The curriculum emphasises leadership and innovation through communication by introducing challenging live experiences where students collaborate, experiment, and iterate solutions.

MODULES

FUNDAMENTALS OF LIVE DESIGN
Introduction to advanced creative and technical workflow practices in the design of live events and installations taught through a series of lectures, workshops with industry guests and experiential trips to meet with industry leading companies, projects and installations.

EXPERIENTIAL STORYTELLING
This module explores visual storytelling techniques. You will trace historical perspectives and developments whilst evaluating the influence of current trends and methodologies. You will also investigate the creation of brand and cultural identity through experience in multiple formats including theatre, film, concert touring, corporate events and architecture.

BUILDING LIVE EXPERIENCES
A series of intensive projects designed to ground students in process workflows and tools used in the creation of production designs for the live events industry.

INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT
An enriched research and development team project taking place over the course of a full semester and utilising practical creative and technical practices. Interdisciplinary projects are engaged by submission from industry, faculty or students to push creative or technological motivations through active research.

Optional modules take place in 5 week blocks and allow you to choose 3 industry disciplines to specialise in from the following options:

INDUSTRY PLACEMENT
Core relationship development and employability stand at the heart of academic practice at Backstage Academy. This industry placement module is the highlight of the degree experience. It allows you to gain practical experience with World leading practitioners and presents the opportunity to explore and analytically reflect on working practices, career goals and industry methodologies.

RESEARCH DISSERTATION
This negotiated project gives you the opportunity to develop your own ideas, research into new techniques and processes, and contribute to the institutional and industry knowledge pool of documented practice. The end deliverable is presented and defended in analytical critique by a panel of industry and academic peers.
