How to Avoid Student Debt

Making ends meet and avoiding getting into debt while you’re at uni can be tough when there’s so much to do and so few funds to do it with. However, until your career in live events has taken off one of your main priorities should be managing your finances and getting through your course debt free! Here are a few ways you can do it….

Eligible for further funding?
You will normally be entitled to a tuition fee loan but you may also be eligible for further grants that you don’t have to pay back. The amount you’ll receive is dependent on your household income but it’s worth applying for any extra money you can get your hands on!

Get part-time work
If you have spare time between lectures and work experience organised through Backstage, a part-time job that actually pays is definitely worth having. It’s even better if you can relate it to your course and it looks good on your C.V., but money is money and having a bit extra each month will make life a lot easier.

Budget
A bit of careful budgeting can go a long way. Get into the habit of putting money aside each month that you need for bills, food and general living costs and you’ll know exactly how much you can spend on yourself. It’s a simple way to avoid stress associated with money, or lack of!

Ask the ‘rents
If they’re in a position to help you out it’s not the end of the world to take advantage when you’re really cash-strapped. You can pay them back when it’s your turn to look after them later down the line!

Student discount
Take advantage of the 10% discount you get with your NUS card because all those smaller savings add up. Get money off at restaurants, clothes shops and loads of other places and look out for special fresher events where they offer 20% discount.
