How to choose the right university course
Choosing a university can be tough, and with the UCAS deadline approaching it’s always a stressful time of year. The courses offered at Backstage Academy offer a diverse range of specialist subjects – but which one do you choose? (Check out the ‘courses’ page for details) The answer is “it depends.” It depends on you, because everything about choosing where you spend the next few years of your life is subjective. It’s all guesswork and finding out as much as you can before taking the plunge. So, here are a few tips to help you make the right decision.
Firstly, do your research. Backstage Academy offer easy-to-read explanations for each of our degrees. Take into account every significant detail: requirements for entry, how long the degree lasts and the location. Get in touch with former students for a real insight into the university life and don’t be afraid to bombard them with questions! Check out the Student Zone page for an idea of what you can achieve. Remember, university is a big commitment. It takes a lot of financing, it can be a long way from home, but mainly it can determine your career path for many years to come – so make sure the subject is something you enjoy! Check all of the course specifications to get a good idea of what you will be learning about – do the modules take your interest? Are you getting everything you want out of the course? If you’re happy with what you see, take the next step.
If you’ve missed the chance to go to an open day (we have another in February by the way!), do the next best thing and visit the town or city your chosen university is in. It’s important to be in an environment you’re comfortable with, it’ll have a huge impact on your final decision. Go and check it out! Soak up the atmosphere and have a good root around; Does the place suit your lifestyle? Do you feel like you could settle down there? Only one way to find out! Take a look at the ‘Life in Wakefield’ page for an insight into our hometown.
Don’t be shy! Get in touch with the course leaders, ask them questions – they’ll be more than happy to help you. Or, alternatively – Use your social media to contact Backstage Academy via a Facebook message (https://www.facebook.com/backstageacademy/) or a Tweet! (https://twitter.com/BackstageAcad) Also, talk to fellow applicants for their insights and guidance, it’s always good to get another opinion.
So, if you’re confident in your decision – go ahead and apply! As you can imagine, some courses are very competitive, so take care when writing your applications. If you don’t get accepted to your desired course, don’t be too disheartened! There is still a chance you can get in. All courses require a certain amount of students to sign up, however not all spaces are filled. Take a look at UCAS’ clearing methods – any empty gaps are filled with the students that weren’t accepted onto their first choices. So not to worry, there’s still hope!
Have fun making your decision, consider every aspect of the course and enjoy your experience.
