Q&A with Roger Lindsay
5 Minutes with the Legendary Sound Engineer
We recently grabbed 5 minutes with the legendary sound engineer and Backstage masterclass expert, Roger Lindsay, for a quick chat about his incredible career. A number of students have already had the pleasure of being taught by him and the feedback they gave on the session was fantastic…
“It was a glorious insight into the inner working of the live events industry over the years.”
“Extremely influential and one of my favourite sessions.”
“One of the most influential lessons I’ve ever had, what a great guy!”
“He made everyone feel at ease and like it was possible for us all to get into sound, no matter what our experience. Came out of the lesson feeling motivated and inspired.”
“He created a very friendly and relaxed environment to share with us some of his wealth of experience. A real privilege.”
Check out the Q&A below…
Can you remember the moment you realised this was what you wanted to do?
At my first gig at the Cavern in Liverpool as roadie for some friends that had a 3 piece Blues band. I really enjoyed it, but never thought it would turn into the fulfilling career I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy ever since.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned in the industry?
Take chances, be adventurous, do things that scare you. Get the job first….then do your homework before the first show, and make sure you do it well.
You’ve worked for some amazing clients including The Royal Family, Prince, and Formula One teams, but which project have you enjoyed working on the most?
Every one of them…they all presented me with unique challenges.
What have you found to be the biggest challenge in your career so far?
Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s 2012 “Jesus Christ Superstar” Arena tour. Despite 40 years experience, I’d never mixed any musical theatre, and had to learn a whole set of new skills. Never a dull moment!
What piece of advice would you give to someone wanting to go down the same career path as you?
Commit to it 100%, believe in yourself, and trust your own ears.
Why did you decide to get involved with Backstage Academy?
The Academy offered me the opportunity to give something back to the industry that has supported me throughout my adult life, and be part of a team of dedicated professionals helping future generations of live engineers gain knowledge and skills that took me a lifetime to acquire.
